RCES Data Collectors
The US Department of Education has funded the Social Development Lab at the University of Virginia, led by Sara Rimm-Kaufman, to conduct a multi-year, randomized controlled trial of the Responsive Classroom® Approach, a Social and Emotional Learning Intervention used by more than 60,000 teachers nationwide. The primary aim is to examine the effectiveness of Responsive Classroom for enhancing classroom practices and children’s achievement.
We are seeking ambitious, enthusiastic, and organized Data Collectors for this study. These are part-time, hourly contractor positions of up to 20 hrs./week for 10 months per year, requiring flexibility to adjust work schedules to coincide with the participating schools’ operating calendar (e.g. the start of school day). Pay ranges from $12 - $15/hr. depending on experience.
Data Collectors will:
- Travel to each study school to collect data, including classroom video-taped observations, teacher and administrative surveys and qualitative interviews
- Work with field management to adjust and follow individual data collection schedules, adjusting as needed to complete all observations in a timely manner
- Follow protocols to systematically collect data
- Attend pertinent research group or school group meetings in Fairfax or Charlottesville related to the study, if needed
- Follow U.S. Department of Education requirements for conducting federally funded research, including record-keeping needed for compiling annual reports
- Follow Fairfax County Public Schools and University of Virginia guidelines for protection of human subjects in research
Qualifications
- Bachelors’ degree preferred
- Excellent communication (verbal and oral) and interpersonal skills
- Experience conducting research is ideal
- Ability to work in fast-paced environment, respond immediately to multiple constituencies and meet established deadlines
- Ability to work well collaboratively and independently and to communicate effectively with study collaborators
- Ability to master new technology
- Excellent attention to detail
